Mazatlan Mexico is an interesting and challenging dive location. Mazatlan is on the Pacific coast of Mexico and is protected by 3 islands. Most of the diving is on the leeward side of the islands and tends to be very shallow, less than 30 feet maximum depth. The majority of the sea life lives in and around the rocks of the shores of the islands.
The major issues with diving in Mazatlan are the visibility (20-30 feet on a good day but can quickly change to 5-10 feet) and the surge. However the rich variety of life and the opportunities for macro photography make it a great place to muck dive.
For those not sure what much diving is, let me explain. Much diving is a term that describes macro photographic work down close to the reef, the ocean floor or up close to the bottom, hence, in the muck. Some of the more interesting sea life is found down in the muck.
On this trip I have seen and photographed sea snakes, rock fish, octopus, sea cucumber, star fish, shrimp, crab, all sorts of interesting small coral and nudi branches.
I will post a complete dive report upon my return with some great pictures so stay tuned!
