Michael Ault's Scuba Blog
I will try to keep this blog up as I progess in the world of Scuba.
Stupid Attacks!

Maybe stupid, but I like to think a touch of narcosis. I was diving Lake Lanier, Viz was about 5-10 feet (if you didn't touch bottom, if you did, zero) was looking to get some shots of the remains of the wood pile and some of the standing trees at about 50 foot depth (normally 70 or so, but levels are down.) I see a rod and reel laying on the bottom. I clip the camera to my D-ring and after giving the glove a yank to free it (it got caught by the D-ring snap) I grabbed the rod and reel and since it was about turn time, started heading back to the entry point.

I get to an interesting spot and grab for the camera...it isn't there. Let's recount, I just traded a busted fishing rod and reel worth maybe $70 bucks (if that) new for $3000.00 worth of camera gear...can you say douh! I spent until bingo level retracing steps, it is a no go.

I return to shore, switch over to my other set of doubles, turn on the valve and...zero PSI, someone didn't fill the tank at the LDS like they say they did...

I get out the cell phone and call the wife:

"Honey, could you do a big favor for me..." (She hates it when I start out like that)

"What dear..." I can hear the TV in the background.

"I need my single tanks and my single BP/STA and wing setup."

"Why...I thought you were using your doubles today."

"Well...I used one set, the other is empty, the LDS didn't fill it right."

"Just come home." The moment of truth...

"I can't, I lost my camera." The phone suddenly is quiet...you know those movies where things start to crackle and turn white from getting rapidly frozen? It begins to do that as the emotional temperature drops several degrees.

"What?!!"

"It came unclipped,  I have to search for it."

After threats of never letting me dive again and other ones I cannot repeat in polite company she agrees to bring the tanks and gear.

To make a long story short, she forgave me (after I pointed out a few minor items (emerald ear rings from a Columbian business trip and a set of Ruby ear rings form a Curacao vacation) she had misplaced.  I use two singles down to bingo levels searching and it is like the camera has disappeared.

Anyway, always check and double check when you clip off an item. Always keep track of headings and changes to headings while in limited viz. I am offering a reward for the camera if someone finds it. Email me for details using the contact us page.
